I gave up cigars several years ago. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. The entire time I was going through the nicotine I was so cranky that my wife and kids practically begged me to start smoking again. We were all happy when I finally regained my regular cheerful personality and no longer found myself reaching for a cigar every five minutes.
The more time that passed since my last cigar, the less I found myself reaching for a pack of cigars that was no longer there. Eventually the time came when I hardly even thought about smoking.
A few months ago I found myself laid off. This would have been more devastating but I quickly found another job as a long distance truck driver. I’ve never been so glad I decided to keep my CDL license current even though I never thought I’d use it again.
I miss my family while I’m on the road, but at the same time I really like my new job. I get to go to all different parts of the country, and never get tired of seeing new places. I have also discovered that I really enjoy meeting so many new faces.
The thing I really dislike is the fact that the radio and audiobooks can only keep me occupied for so long. After a while I start getting surprised. The more bored I got, the more I found myself longing for a cigar. For the first time in my life I realized that a big reason I used to smoke was to help alleviate boredom.
The longer I worked as a long distance trucker, the more I found myself longing for a cigar. I worried the day would come when I would gas up my truck and purchase a pack of fresh cup of coffee and a pack of cigars. Once I started smoking, I didn’t know if I’d have the mental strength to make myself stop a second time. I really didn’t want to know what my wife would do if she had to go through my withdrawals again. She still gets pale whenever the subject comes up.
One of the guys at the garage heard me complaining about my boredom and my worry about resuming my smoking habit. He quickly walked up to me and handed me what I mistakenly assumed was a cigar. He explained that it was in fact a battery powered electronic cigar, and he was sure it would solve my problems.
He was right. When the drive starts to get dull, I reach for my electronic cigar, which I’ve set up with a replaceable cartridge that is filled with nicotine vapor juice. Puffing on the electronic cigar allows me to stave off my boredom without having to worry about once again becoming addicted to nicotine.
